As DSC theoretical and algorithmic foundations have now been established, a comprehensive reference text on the subject is timely. The authors will combine the strict mathematical exposition of DSC with a more intuitive approach, and the book will be split into 3 distinct sections: theory, algorithms, and applications. Part one will cover the background of information theory and data compression, and the development of DSC, following both lossless and lossy compression. Part two will introduce and discuss designs of algorithmic solutions for DSC problems. It will cover the background of coding theory, then the evolution of code designs for the three most important DSC problems – Slepian-Wolf, Wyner-Ziv and MT source coding. It will also address the distributed joint source-channel coding problem and conclude with practical network coding of correlated sources. Part three will be dedicated to potential DSC applications, which are grouped as multimedia applications and wireless communication applications: the multimedia aspects will include image/video processing, Wyner-Ziv (distributed video coding), robust and scalable video, stereo/multiview video applications, multimedia streaming, biometrics, and multispectral/hyperspectral imaging; and the wireless focus will be dedicated to data gathering in wireless sensor networks, spectrum sensing in cognitive radio, compress-and-forward in cooperative communications scenarios, and DSC’s relationship to compressive sampling.
