This book frames the concept and explores the various aspects of urban photovoltaics (UPV), with a focus on the multifaceted nature of urban factors that influence PV design and deployment. From a technical perspective, specific urban challenges include limited space and shading from neighbouring structures, as well as the complex interplay between energy generation and consumption patterns from buildings and electric vehicles. From an environmental perspective, the book sheds light on the carbon and material footprint of PV systems, considering their impact on the urban microclimate and interaction with urban vegetation. From a societal perspective, it discusses architectural design and integration, solar neighbourhoods, and the behavioural dynamics elicited by novel energy-sharing concepts, as well as the influence of PV deployment on the housing market. By synthesising these diverse topics, the book serves as a guide for researchers and practitioners involved in urban design, energy planning, PV deployment, and policy making. It addresses the urgent need to optimise land use and conserve biodiversity by maximising the potential of urban spaces for PV energy generation, while considering how to integrate PV systems into the urban fabric. Through detailed explorations of the challenges, solutions, and best practices involved, the book aims to promote the effective integration of PV systems into urban settings and thereby contribute to a sustainable and resilient urban futures.

Arno Schlueter holds a degree in Architecture from the Karlsruhe University of Technology and a PhD in Building Systems from ETH Zurich. His research focuses on systemic approaches to integrating energy, emissions and human comfort into the design, production and operation of buildings. He teaches and researches on integrated building systems for low-emission buildings and cities, from design to operation, using computational and experimental approaches. He is a professor at the Institute of Technology in Architecture at ETH Zurich, where he leads the Chair of Architecture and Building Systems. Since 2011, he has been a Principal Investigator and is currently the Director of the Zurich Hub of the SEC Future Cities Lab, as well as the Director of Studies of the Master's in Integrated Building Systems programme.

Christoph Waibel holds a degree in architecture from the University of Stuttgart, an M.Sc. in Environmental Design and Engineering from University College London, and a Ph.D. in co-simulation and optimisation from ETH Zurich. Christoph focuses on the development and integration of models for building simulation, multi-energy systems, machine learning, and optimisation for the design of sustainable buildings and cities. He is currently the activity lead of the Construction Robotics and Innovative Building Envelopes (CRIB) group at VITO, Belgium. Previously, he was module coordinator at the SEC Future Cities Lab and worked as a lecturer and senior researcher at the Chair of Architecture and Building Systems (A/S), ETH Zurich. Prior to his academic career, Christoph worked in industry as a programmer and 3D modeller for geometrically complex building projects, and as a building simulation specialist.
